Red Sox Lose to Orioles as Offense Struggles

The Boston Red Sox fell to the Baltimore Orioles, 4–2, Tuesday night at Fenway Park. The Orioles earned the win behind Shane Baz, who allowed two runs over seven innings with six strikeouts. Connelly Early took the loss after giving up four runs in 5 1/3 innings. The matchup featured early scoring from both sides, but the Red Sox were unable to build on their first‑inning lead.

Red Sox-Orioles Game Summary

The Red Sox struck first in the opening inning. Jarren Duran led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Wilyer Abreu.

The Orioles answered in the second. Coby Mayo’s leadoff hit was initially ruled a double, but replay showed the ball clearing the fence before bouncing back into play. The call was overturned to a home run, Mayo’s seventh of the season.

The Orioles added on in the third. With a runner on, Pete Alonso crushed a changeup over the Green Monster for his 12th home run of the year. Later in the inning, Blaze Alexander lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in Tyler O’Neill, extending the lead to 4–1.

The Red Sox scored their second run on a sacrifice fly from Marcelo Mayer.

What Went Right for the Red Sox

Great Relief Outings

Greg Weissert and Tyler Samaniego both did excellent jobs in relief. They tossed a combined 3 2/3 scoreless innings, keeping the Red Sox close.

What Went Wrong for the Red Sox

Offense Struggled to Create Opportunities

The Red Sox finished with five hits and two walks, making it difficult to build sustained pressure. Aside from contributions from Mickey Gasper and Ceddanne Rafaela, the lineup had trouble generating traffic on the bases.

Looking Ahead

The Red Sox (25–34) and Orioles (29–32) will play the second game of their three-game series Wednesday evening. Payton Tolle will start for the Red Sox, and Chris Bassitt will pitch for the Orioles. First pitch will be at 6:45 p.m. Eastern.
