Thanks to timely hitting and dominant starting pitching performances, the New York Yankees swept the Boston Red Sox in the two sides’ first meeting of the year. The sweep helped the Yankees stretch their lead in the American League East, as the team sits 2 ½ games clear of the second-place Tampa Bay Rays. These are the major takeaways from the Yankees’ third series sweep of the year.
Three Dominant Starts
The Yankees lead the majors in ERA at 3.07, and their series against the Red Sox showed exactly why.
To begin the series, Luis Gil had his best start of the season. Across six innings, the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year allowed no runs on two hits. He did issue three walks, though, proving his command is still a problem.
The following day, Max Fried pitched his best game of the year. In a season-high eight innings, Fried held the Red Sox scoreless on three hits, striking out nine batters in the process. This performance dropped his season ERA to 2.40 and WHIP to 0.77, the latter being the fifth-best mark in baseball.
To conclude the series, Massachusetts native Cam Schlittler had another masterful performance. Against his hometown team, Schlittler went eight innings and allowed a lone earned run, with that being a solo home run by former Yankees Carlos Narvaez. He struck out five batters over the course of the afternoon, giving him the fifth most in baseball at 41.
Rosario Stays Hot
Amed Rosario’s impact on the Yankees this season cannot be understated.
Re-signed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract in early December, Rosario was viewed as nothing more than a utility piece at the time. However, due to the underwhelming play of third baseman Ryan McMahon, Rosario began to see the field more.
On Wednesday, Rosario got the start over McMahon once more, and he didn’t disappoint. In his first at-bat of the game, Rosario launched a three-run home run over the Green Monster to give the Yankees a 3–0 lead. In his next at-bat, Rosario hit a sacrifice fly into left field that scored Aaron Judge. The Yankees won 4–1, with their third baseman driving in every run.
The following day, Rosario led off and went one for three with a single. For the 2026 campaign, he is hitting .268 with four home runs, 13 RBI, and an .828 OPS.
Timely Hitting
The Yankees scored four runs in each game of the series, and their performance with runners in scoring position was a key reason why.
In such scenarios, the Yankees hit .318, a number that differs drastically from their .226 average for the season. That mark is the 24th best in baseball.
Simply put, if the Yankees hope to stay hot, they need to perform well with runners on base.
Next Up
The Yankees will battle the Houston Astros for the first time this season on Friday in the opener of a three-game series. Will Warren will make his sixth start of the season in the series’ first game, with the first pitch set for 8:10 p.m.
