The San Francisco Giants have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with right-handed reliever Luke Jackson. Jackson, who missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, signed the deal on Monday morning. Terms of the deal have not been announced, but Robert Murray of FanSided reported that it’s for $11.5 million, with a club option for 2025.

Back of the Bullpen

Since 2019, Luke Jackson has worked mostly in the closer’s role for the Atlanta Braves. The 31-year-old righty recorded 18 saves for the Braves, with an ERA of 3.84 during the 2019 season. He had a bit of a decline when he posted a 6.84 ERA during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. His toughest year came in 2016 with the Texas Rangers. That year, Luke Jackson pitched in eight games. In that time, his ERA ballooned to 10.80. He spent two years with the Rangers, pitching in a total of 15 games. He has been used exclusively out of the bullpen during his time in the majors and has a career record of 16–6 with an earned run average of 4.24.

Strong 2021 Season

Luke Jackson was able to bounce back in 2021, however. The Braves stuck with Jackson, and they were rewarded. Prior to being shelved in 2022 due to Tommy John surgery, he posted an ERA of 1.98 with a record of 2–2. This was over a stretch of 71 games with Atlanta. He held opponents scoreless in nine of his 11 appearances during the 2021 postseason and surrendered just one hit in three appearances in 3 1/3 innings during the Braves World Series triumph over the Houston Astros.

Giants’ Staff After Addition of Luke Jackson

Jackson will join a Giants pitching staff that includes Alex Wood, Logan Webb, Cole Waites, and Ross Stripling among others. The Giants finished the 2022 season as a .500 ball club with a record of 81–81. Fans in the Bay area are hoping that this revamped pitching staff can lead them to more victories in the upcoming 2023 campaign.
