Angels Call Up Zach Neto

Zach Neto

The Los Angeles Angels called up Zach Neto. He made his major league debut on April 15. The team selected the shortstop out of Campbell University in the first-round of the 2022 draft. He is expected to take over the shortstop position full-time, and hopefully for their long-term future. Fans are very excited for his arrival. They’re looking forward to seeing whay he can do.

In the Starting Lineup

Neto started Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox and hit eighth. He went 0-for-4, and then led off for Sunday’s game, also going 0-for-4. However, it is just a matter of time before he gets his first hit.

What did shine was his defense. In the two games he played over the weekend, he had a combined five putouts, two assists, and was involved in four double plays. He also showed the fans what to expect from him with his quick glove and agility around the shortstop position.

First Pick to Debut

The Angels called up Zach Neto after only 44 minor league games with Double-A. He is the first 2022 draft pick to debut in the majors. While in the minors, he hit .322 in 174 at-bats with eight home runs and 92 total bases. Scouts describe Neto as a “plus defender.” Combined with his bat, he is expected to be a very good contributor.

Spring Training

Neto had an excellent spring training, posting an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .828 in 16 games. He showed average speed, nevertheless he was aggressive on the basepaths and demonstrated outstanding instincts by routinely taking extra bases.

Will Struggle

Zach Neto will also struggle at times. However, the young man will adjust. Having the veteran Mike Trout, probably the top player in the game, as a mentor should help ease those struggles and keep them from being long and drawn out.

Anxious Times

Right now, these are anxious times for this Angels team and front office. They want, and need, to win this year and will take chances. Moves like bringing up Neto and having the top prospect in the entire organization in catcher Logan O’Hoppe, will show that the team’s top priority is winning. This will hopefully excite the fans.

Looming on the Horizon

Fans know what is looming on the horizon if the Angles do not show a commitment to winning. Shohei Ohtani, their incredible two-way superstar, and probably the biggest free agent at the end of the season, could go looking for a more competitive team. Ohtani is a player this organization does not want to lose. They’re making moves now to demonstrate they are committed to winning in hopes of having a chance to keep him for their long-term future.

Still, seeing the exciting Neto getting major league experience is a plus for the team. Neto can only get better as he plays, especially as he gets used to big-league pitching. Seeing the future of this team, and getting his start is a plus for the fans that are looking for something to cheer for.
