Brandon Hyde takes home the 2023 AL Manager of the Year award after his Baltimore Orioles won an AL-best 101 games in the regular season. Hyde guided the Orioles do the AL East title and their first playoff berth since 2016. The Orioles selected Hyde as manager in 2019. Hyde, who managed the then-Florida Marlins in 2011 in an interim position, stepped into his first real managerial job. The Orioles young core took a liftoff this season, and Hyde was also a part of their development. After winning 83 games in the 2022 season but missing the postseason, the Orioles bounced back significantly. Hyde took a team that few expected to win their division and notched it up one step. After the Tampa Bay Rays took an early lead in the division with their historic start, the Orioles hot streak throughout the season caught up to the Rays.

Skip Schumaker is in the same boat as Hyde regarding expectations preceding the season. The Marlins were discredited before the year started and were looked at as a pedestrian team. Under the brilliance of Schumaker, the Marlins exceeded expectations. They went 83-79, making the postseason. The season before, former skipper Don Mattingly went 69-93 with the ballclub. Although many people counted out the Marlins, first-year manager Schumaker delivered Miami’s first postseason since 2020. Even with players like Jazz Chisolm Jr, Trevor Rogers, Johnny Cueto, and Avisail Garcia missing significant time, Schumaker won without the stars. A star-studded debut season for Schumaker gave Miami’s baseball fans renewed hope for the ballclub.
