First baseman Josh Bell lands with the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday afternoon for cash considerations. Bell, a switch-hitting first baseman, continues the firesale by the second-to-last Miami Marlins in the National League. The Diamondbacks, whose first baseman Christian Walker is battling oblique tightness, acquired the 31-year-old as cover for their star. Josh Bell will join his sixth team in his career, and in the third straight season, he will play with two teams in one season. Bell is a one-time All-Star in 2019 and Silver Slugger in 2022.

Arizona Diamondbacks Spotlight

The Diamondbacks make a trade to cover for Christian Walker’s injuries. Bell, who has had a down season so far, has posted a .239 batting average, and .305 OBP with 14 home runs. The 31-year-old is posting his worst average since the 2020 shortened season and is matching his OBP in 2020. The Diamondbacks did not acquire Bell to be the replacement for the future, but rather as a good platoon and first base option for cover. This season, the Snakes sit half a game back of the final wild-card spot, and third in the NL West. NL West foe San Diego Padres sit in the final wild-card spot. Bell is a rental acquisition, as he is in the final year of a two-year, 33-million-dollar deal.

Miami Marlins Spotlight

For the Marlins, the fire sale continues before the 2024 deadline. The last-place NL East team will not make a push for the postseason in 2024 after their wild-card appearance in 2023. Earlier this deadline, the Fish traded Trevor Rogers and Jazz Chisholm Jr. to two AL East teams. Now, Bell goes to the Diamondbacks in an intra-league deal. Miami jumped on top of Bells’ value, as the DH/1B has five home runs in his last nine games. Miami may continue to sell as much as it can, as the 2024 deadline is a coveted seller’s market.
