Behind home runs from Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr., the New York Yankees came back from a five-run deficit to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-6 on Tuesday night in Game Three of the ALDS.

With home runs in games one and two of the ALDS, Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made Blue Jays history in the first inning of Game Three. After blasting a two-run home run off Yankee starter Carlos Rodon, Guerrero became the first player in franchise history with home runs in three straight postseason games.

Yankees Respond in First Inning

After Aaron Judge and Ben Rice both reached base, Giancarlo Stanton lined a hard-hit single into left field, scoring Judge and cutting the Blue Jays’ 2-0 lead in half. This marked only the second time this postseason that the Yankees scored in the first inning.

One game after Max Fried couldn’t make it to the fourth inning, Carlos Rodon failed to make it past the third. After allowing RBI singles to Daulton Varsho and Ernie Clement, Rodon allowed a two-RBI single to Anthony Santander, giving Toronto a 6-1 lead. This concluded his night one out into the third inning.

Yankees Score Two More

After Trent Grisham doubled, Aaron Judge scored him with an RBI double to left field. Cody Bellinger then singled, and Giancarlo Stanton scored him for his second RBI of the night. One batter later, the Blue Jays pulled the plug on starter Shane Bieber with two outs in the third. This marked Bieber’s shortest career postseason start.

Judge Ties Game With Home Run

Already with two hits on the night, Aaron Judge delivered a memorable third. With two runners on, Judge blasted a three-run home run off the left field foul pole, tying the game at 6-6. With that hit, Judge tied David Ortiz for the most home runs when facing elimination with six.

Chisholm, Wells Give Yankees Lead

Despite not having led at any point during the ALDS, Jazz Chisholm Jr. changed everything with one swing. With the count even at 1-1, Chisholm took reliever Louis Varland’s four-seam fastball into right field’s second deck for a solo home run. Then, after Amed Rosario doubled, Austin Wells singled into left field to score him and give New York an 8-6 lead.

Yankees Add Insurance Run

With runners on second and third, Ben Rice delivered a sac fly into right field, giving the Yankees a three-run advantage. This represented Rice’s fourth RBI in the 2025 postseason.

Bednar Completes Five-Out Save

With two outs left in the eighth inning, Yankee manager Aaron Boone turned to his closer, David Bednar, to finish the game. He successfully retired the final five batters and secured a 9-6 win for the Yankees.

What Went Right for the Yankees

After allowing 14 runs in the first two games of the series, the Yankee bullpen was lights out Tuesday night. In less than seven innings, New York’s relievers allowed only three hits with nine strikeouts.

What Went Wrong for the Yankees

For the third straight game, the Yankees’ starting pitcher didn’t make it past the third inning. To preserve their bullpen, New York must begin to get lengthier production from their starters.

Manager Reactions

Even though his team took care of business tonight, Aaron Boone said postgame that his team is not done yet. “We need another one tomorrow,” said Boone. “We’ll enjoy this for about 10 minutes and get ready for tomorrow.”

Despite surrendering a five-run advantage, Blue Jays manager John Schneider has no doubts about his team’s ability to bounce back. “These guys will be ready to go,” said Schneider postgame. “I got all the confidence in the world in these guys.”

Next Matchup

The Yankees and Blue Jays will face off tomorrow in Game Four of the ALDS, with Toronto leading the series 2-1. The Yankees will host for the second straight game, as the first pitch is set for 7:08 pm Eastern. Cam Schlittler will take the ball for New York in his second postseason start. The Blue Jays have yet to announce their starter.
