The St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals are looking toward another Intrastate rivalry series beginning May 15 at 7:15 pm Central. The Royals will head down Interstate 70 to Busch Stadium for three days of intense gameplay. The Cardinals-Royals rivalry is an anticipated event and a sacred holiday in most Midwest households, so here is the essential need-to-knows for the “Show-Me Series.”

A Rivalry Rooted in History

Few interleague matchups in baseball carry the historical weight that the Cardinals Royals series does. Known as the “I-70 Showdown” or “Show-Me Series” the rivalry takes its name from the interstate highway that runs through the state of Missouri (home to both teams), nicknamed the “Show-Me State.” Since interleague play did not begin until 1997, the first matchup between the two franchises was the 1985 World Series. This Series saw the Royals overcome a 3–1 series deficit to win in seven games, including a ninth-inning comeback in Game Six. That loss still stings in St. Louis, and every May series since has carried a trace of that 1985 heartbreak.

The Cardinals lead the all-time series against the Royals, 79-55. The Cardinals and Royals will fight to establish themselves as contenders after different offseason outlooks, where one game could alter their divisional standing.

Where the Cardinals and Royals Stand

The Cardinals enter the series 25–18, sitting third in NL Central. They are three games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs (28-16) and one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers (24-17). After dropping two of three games to the San Diego Padres last week, the Cardinals responded with a series win over the Athletics and will look to carry that momentum into the “Show-Me Series.”

The Royals will arrive at Busch Stadium 19–25, sitting fifth in AL Central. They are five games behind the first-place Cleveland Guardians (24-21). Despite a strong 9–2 stretch earlier in May, they are struggling to close out series and remain consistent. A road series against the Cardinals playing with urgency in a tight divisional race poses a significant challenge.

Meet the MVPs

Royals

If there is one player that can single-handedly change the complexion of this series, it is the Royals Bobby Witt Jr. The 25-year-old shortstop has cemented himself as one of the most complete players in baseball. His stats are a testament to his skills. Witt slashed .295/.351/.501 in 2025 with 23 home runs, 88 RBI, and 38 stolen bases across 157 games. He enters 2026 with a .370 wOBA and a 51.9 hard-hit rate that suggests he is back on the trajectory of his near-MVP 2024 campaign.

Witt led the majors in hits in back-to-back seasons, recording 211 in 2024 and 184 in 2025. He was the first player to accomplish that in consecutive seasons since Whit Merrifield did it for the Royals in 2018 and 2019. Witt recently sent Royals fans into a frenzy with an inside-the-park home run. This reminded spectators that when Witt steps up to the plate, he brings it all and there are no easy innings.

Cardinals

If Witt is the player the Cardinals need to worry about, Jordan Walker is the one they need to get excited about. The 23-year-old right fielder has turned 2026 into the breakout season Cardinals fans have been waiting to see. Walker is slashing .283/.358/.547 with eight home runs, 19 RBI, and five stolen bases. He is sitting in the top 10 in the National League in home runs, slugging percentage, and OPS. Additionally, he ranks in the 99th percentile in average bat speed, the 96th percentile in outfield arm strength, the 91st percentile in average exit velocity, and the 87th percentile in hard-hit rate.

On Mother’s Day, May 10 against the San Diego Padres, he launched a moonshot homer that left the crowd stunned. Wednesday night against the Athletics, Walker delivered the biggest swing of the night with a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning. This came after launching a solo home run earlier in the game and making one of the best defensive plays of the night with a home run robbery in right field. Walker’s raw power and potential are undeniable, and this series is an opportunity for him to present both on a bigger stage.
