Astros 9, Guardians 3

The Houston Astros overcame an early deficit and pulled away late, using a dominant pitching performance and a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Cleveland Guardians 9–3 on Friday night at Daikin Park.

Jeremy Peña homered twice, Jose Altuve delivered a go-ahead three-run home run, and Tatsuya Imai struck out 11 batters as the Astros opened their series against the Guardians with a convincing victory.

Astros – Guardians Game Summary

The Astros found themselves trailing early after the Guardians broke through in the third inning. Travis Bazzana and Brayan Rocchio sparked the rally with doubles before Rhys Hoskins connected on a two-run home run, giving the Guardians a 3–1 advantage.

Despite the rough inning, Imai quickly regained control. The right-hander settled in and dominated the remainder of his outing, consistently missing bats and preventing the Guardians from building on their lead.

The Astros began chipping away in the bottom of the third when Peña launched a solo home run to left field. The blast cut the deficit to one run and shifted momentum back toward the home side.

For several innings, the game remained tightly contested as Imai and Guardians starter Tanner Bibee traded scoreless frames. Yainer Diaz doubled in the fourth inning, but the Astros were unable to bring him home.

The turning point came in the sixth. Yordan Alvarez drew a walk and Isaac Paredes followed with a single before Altuve crushed a three-run home run to the Crawford Boxes. The swing erased the deficit and gave the Astros a 5–3 lead.

The offense continued to add on from there. Peña connected on his second home run of the night in the seventh inning, and Altuve later drove in another run with an RBI double. In the eighth, Jake Meyers delivered an RBI ground-rule double before Peña added an RBI single to extend the lead even further.

The Astros’ pitching staff kept the Guardians off the board after Imai exited. Relievers Steven Okert and Mike Burrows combined for three scoreless innings, helping secure the victory. Peña added the final highlight of the night with a spectacular catch at shortstop to end the game.

What Went Right for the Astros

Tatsuya Imai Settled In After a Rocky Third

The third inning could have unraveled Imai’s outing, but he responded exactly how the Astros needed.

After allowing three runs on three extra-base hits, Imai retired 11 of the next 12 batters he faced and repeatedly overpowered Guardians hitters. He finished with 11 strikeouts across six innings and gave the Astros the opportunity to mount their comeback.

His ability to recover after the third inning prevented the game from getting out of hand and kept the Astros within striking distance.

Jose Altuve

The Astros had opportunities against Tanner Bibee but struggled to break through until the sixth inning.

After Alvarez walked and Paredes singled, Altuve launched a three-run homer that completely changed the game. Instead of trailing late, the Astros suddenly owned a two-run lead and all the momentum.

Altuve added an RBI double in the seventh inning, finishing with four RBI and providing the offensive spark the Astros needed.

Jeremy Peña

First, he hit a solo home run in the third inning to begin the comeback. Later, he added another homer in the seventh before driving in a run with an RBI single in the eighth.

In total, Peña homered twice, drove in two runs, scored multiple times, and continued to create pressure throughout the night. Additionally, he recorded the final out with a highlight-reel play at shortstop.

From the third inning through the final out, Peña consistently found ways to influence the game and help secure the victory.

What Went Wrong for the Astros

The Third Inning

The Guardians took advantage of several mistakes during the third inning.

Back-to-back doubles from Bazzana and Rocchio tied the game before Hoskins launched a two-run homer. What had been a 1–0 Astros lead quickly became a 3–1 deficit.

Fortunately for the Astros, the damage stopped there.

Early Opportunities Went Unfinished

The Astros left several chances on the field before their offensive breakthrough.

Yainer Diaz doubled in the fourth inning but was stranded. The offense also struggled to capitalize on traffic against Bibee through the middle innings.

Those missed opportunities kept the game close until Altuve’s sixth-inning home run changed everything.

Strikeouts Limited Production Early

The lineup struck out frequently against Bibee during the first half of the game.

Alvarez, Christian Walker, Jose Altuve, Cam Smith, and Yainer Diaz were among the hitters retired on strikes before the offense found its rhythm later in the contest.

The Astros eventually overcame those struggles, but the early strikeouts slowed several potential rallies.

What’s Next

The Astros continue their series against the Guardians on Saturday at Daikin Park.

The Astros are expected to start Spencer Arrighetti, who enters with a 7-2 record, a 2.57 ERA, and 60 strikeouts. The Guardians are projected to counter with Joey Cantillo, who owns a 5-3 record, a 4.38 ERA, and 67 strikeouts.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Central on FOX.
