The New York Mets signed veteran outfielder and third baseman Christopher Morel to a minor league deal with Triple-A Syracuse. The contract includes opt-out dates, as first reported by Will Sammon of The Athletic Tuesday.

Christopher Morel Joins Mets

The 27-year-old Morel spent the first two and half seasons of his career with the Chicago Cubs. Across 323 appearances, he produced 257 hits, 43 doubles, 60 home runs and 168 RBI. His best season came in 2023, when he recorded 96 hits, 17 doubles, 26 home runs and 70 RBI. That season he batted .247 on a .821 OPS.

Christopher Morel played another season and a half with the Tampa Bay Rays. In his lone full season, he had 61 hits, 16 doubles, 11 home runs and 33 RBI. He then joined the Miami Marlins, but struggled to tally more than 11 hits. Consequently, the Marlins released him earlier this year.

Morel now joins the Mets minor league system, as an experienced outfielder and infielder. But, he is considered a below average fielder at those positions. Still, the Mets will take anything they can get from him, with their lineup being injury riddled. They are also 15 games below .500 with a 35–50 record.

The team announced that Luis Robert Jr. has begun a rehabilitation assignment. The Mets traded for the veteran outfielder during the offseason due to his defense and experience. But, persistent lower body injuries took him out of action in late April. In his first season in Queens, he had 19 hits, two home runs and eight RBI.

The Mets also announced that Jorge Polanco has begun another rehabilitation assignment. Polanco was trending towards making a full recovery last month, but his progress was slowed down by another injury. He was taken out of action in early April due to an ankle and Achilles problem. In 14 appearances, he recorded 10 hits, two RBI and a home run.
