Mets 6, Royals 2
In a quiet middle game of their series, the New York Mets strung together a 6–2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. At Citi Field on Wednesday, A.J. Ewing hit a leadoff shot in the first. Seven innings later, his team put five more runs across the board to move ahead of their opponent. Righty Christian Scott tossed five innings without giving up a run. He ended the outing with three strikeouts while sureendering three hits.
Tied After Six
Scott allowed his first hit of the game to Bobby Witt Jr. on a single. But, he escaped the first without allowing another one. Ewing then blasted a lead off shot to deep center field on his first plate appearance. In the second, Scott walked a batter before giving up a hit to Issac Collins. Still, the Mets ended the inning without allowing a run to score.
Juan Soto drew a walk and Bo Bichette lined a single in the third. But this was to no avail, as Francisco Lindor flew out. Two innings later, Jac Caglianone doubled off Tobias Myers. Salvador Perez then delivered on an RBI single that tied the game at 1–1.
Mets Plate Five
In a tense eighth inning, Lindor singled and Carson Benge drew a walk before Jorge Polanco lined a single. With the bases loaded, Jared Young was hit by a pitch to score a run. Brett Baty then drove in a pair on a clutch two RBI single. Young then scored off a wild pitch. To end the frame, Francisco Alvarez scored Baty on a single.
As they took a five-run lead, the Mets turned to righty Xzavion Curry. He got the first two outs, but then walked Josh Rojas. Carter Jensen then hit a RBI double cut the lead down to four. Yet, Curry struck out Witt to seal the Mets four-run victory.
What Went Right For The Mets
Ewing led off the game with a home run in addition to tallying another hit. Baty came through in the eighth with a two RBI single. Alvarez plated an RBI single of his own. Scott spun five scoreless innings, tossing five strikeouts and allowing three hits. He finished with a 3.17 ERA.
What Went Wrong For The Mets
Myers gave up three hits and an earned run in two innings of relief. Curry gave up a run and a hit, although he sealed the win. Soto went hitless, as Lindor and Bichette didn’t score any runs.
Looking Ahead
After taking care of business in the middle game, the Mets need one more win to take the series from the Royals. Sean Manaea (1-4, 5.16 ERA) will start in the series finale against Michael Wacha (5-6 3.45 ERA). First pitch for Thursday’s game from Citi Field is at 1:10 pm Eastern.
