The New York Mets will place infielder Mark Vientos on the injured list with a fractured bone in his right hand. Manager Andy Green disclosed the injury after Thursday’s 7–3 win over the Kansas City Royals at Citi Field. It came more than a week following Marcus Semien landing on the injured list with a hip flexor strain. The Mets, meanwhile, have won four of their last five games.

Mark Vientos Injury

During the series finale against the Royals, Vientos’ right hand was struck by a fastball. The ball plunked the Mets third baseman, who moved off home plate in pain. He then fell to the ground, before returning to run the bases to finish the inning.

However, that was the end of the game for Mark Vientos. Green pulled him in favor of Brett Baty, who moved over to third. A.J. Ewing then slotted into second base, with Jared Young holding down first.

The injury comes at a crucial time for Vientos, who has struggled to start the season. In 73 appearances, he has 50 hits, 35 RBI and 11 home runs. This production is far from his numbers in 2024, when he tallied 27 home runs and 71 RBI. His defense has also regressed this year, as he committed multiple fielding errors on routine plays.

Another Setback

The Mets have been plagued by injuries anytime they put together a winning streak. Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor missed time due to separate quad injuries. Luis Robert Jr. has been sidelined with a back injury.

On the other hand, Francisco Alvarez returned from injury and has been performing well at the catcher spot. Yet, Mark Vientos is another name added to the injured list for a Mets team that has won four of their last five. They will need to continue winning without him going into their next series at Citi Field against the Boston Red Sox, beginning Friday evening at 7:15 pm Eastern.
