Right-hander Christian Scott has provided the New York Mets with reliable outings after returning from the Injured List earlier this season. During the series finale against the Atlanta Braves, Scott recorded seven strikeouts, five hits and one earned run. In the sixth, he did run into trouble, giving up three hits and a run. That was his lone mistake of the evening, as the Braves beat the Mets, 1–0. He ended the game with a 3–3 record and a 2.99 ERA across 15 appearances.
“I thought [Scott] was great. Going into the sixth he was pushed at a point in time to get that out with the bases loaded was huge,” interim manager Andy Green said. “He kept us in the game. Giving us a chance to win. In six innings you punch seven. Pretty dominant, only one walk. Went toe-to-toe with one of the best in the league.”
Christian Scott is Consistent
At the start of his second season in Queens, Scott was promoted to the major league roster as a replacement for Kodai Senga, who dealt with an injury. The 27-year-old righty made an immediate impact, going 4–2 in his first six outings. He punched out more than five batters on three separate occasions, including a season-high of eight.
Christian Scott picked up more steam in June, winning all three of his appearances with 15 total strikeouts and six earned runs. Yet, his season was put on hold by a right hip injury that sidelined him for a portion of June. Upon making his return, the righty owned a 2–4 in his next six appearances. He tallied seven strikeouts on three separate occasions. For those reasons, the Mets began utilizing him as a regular member of the pitching staff.
Against the Braves, Christian Scott kept them scoreless through five innings, including three consecutive fast innings. He struck out six batters up to that point, including All-Star slugger Matt Olson twice. His outing was overshadowed when he unraveled in the sixth. He didn’t get much support from the Mets, who recorded only two hits and were struck out 12 times.
“I feel like I did a good job of attacking the zone early, especially in the first couple of innings. Put them on their heels and be able to expand when I needed to,” Scott said. “I feel like my cutter was playing really good today, right? I’m also able to have multiple options to go to when I need them.”
