Milwaukee Brewers
Tampa Bay Rays
No lead is safe against the Milwaukee Brewers, and Saturday’s World Series contest proved exactly why. Despite trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by four runs after the top of the first inning, the Rays scored five unanswered runs to win 5–4. However, the victory was no ordinary win. With multiple wins after trailing by four or more runs, the group joined the 1996 New York Yankees, 2002 Los Angeles Angels, 2005 Chicago White Sox, and 2022 Philadelphia Phillies as the only teams to achieve such a feat in a single postseason.
Comeback Kids
1996 Yankees
The Yankees won four World Series titles from 1996 to 2000, but the first didn’t come easy. In Game Three of the ALDS, the Yankees found themselves down 4–0 through three innings against the Texas Rangers. However, thanks to Bernie Williams’ two home runs, the team scored six unanswered runs and punched their ticket to the ALCS.
Then, in Game Four of the World Series, the Yankees trailed 6-0 entering the sixth inning. However, after cutting the Atlanta Braves’ lead in half, Jim Leyritz tied the game with a three-run homer in the eighth inning. The game went to extra innings, where the Yankees prevailed 8–6.
2002 Angels
One year after their iconic World Series collapse, the Yankees held a 6–1 lead against the Angels in Game Three of the ALDS. However, the team fumbled the lead once more, allowing eight unanswered runs and gifting the Angels a 2–1 series lead. Tim Salmon and Adam Kennedy carried most of the load on offense, combining for six of the team’s nine RBI.
In the World Series, the Angels entered Game Six needing a win to extend their season. But after going down 5–0, they looked finished. However, after the Angels pulled within two, Troy Glaus delivered a go-ahead, two-run double to force a Game Seven.
2005 White Sox
A baseball game can change in one frame, and Game Two of the ALDS proved exactly why. Entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the White Sox trailed the Boston Red Sox 4–0. Three outs later, the White Sox found themselves in front 5–4 thanks to RBI from Aaron Rowand, Joe Crede, and Tadahito Iguchi. They held that lead for the rest of the contest, ultimately sweeping the series.
Similarly, in the World Series, the White Sox entered the fifth inning of Game Three trailing 4–0. However, five unanswered runs in the top of the inning put the White Sox in front 5–4 and helped them take a 3–0 series lead.
2022 Phillies
The Phillies didn’t win the World Series like the other teams on this list, but that shouldn’t take away from their comeback efforts.
In Game Three of the NLDS, the San Diego Padres took an early 4-0 lead. However, two home runs from Rhys Hoskins and two RBI doubles from Bryce Harper helped the Phillies win 10–6.
When the World Series arrived, the Phillies found themselves in a similar position. Through three innings of Game One, the Houston Astros led 5–0. Still, the Phillies remained unfazed, scoring six unanswered runs. J.T. Realmuto led the way with three RBI, while Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos combined for three more.
