Miami Marlins
Jean Segura signs with the Miami Marlins. He agreed to a two-year, $17 million deal, according to MLB insider Héctor Gómez. This is the fourth-largest guaranteed contract the Marlins have ever given to a free-agent infielder. Not an organization known for spending big in free agency, this is also one of the biggest signings this offseason for them.
Will Play Third Base
As Jean Segura signs, it appears he will play third base. With Miguel Rojas at shortstop and Jazz Chisholm at second, Segura will take over a position where he has very little experience. He has only played in a total of 24 games at third. That experience came with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020.
Consistent Player

During his career, Segura has been a consistent player both offensively and defensively. He played in 125 games or more each season since 2013, only missing that mark during the 2020 pandemic-shortened season and last season in which he dealt with a fractured finger. Not really considered a top-tier defender, Segura should be better than what Brian Anderson and Jordan Groshans showed last year. He has a solid arm and has developed into a fielder who knows exactly when a play needs to be made. He has continuously worked on throwing runners out on time with regular consistency. Segura knows how to be the leader in the infield and should complement both Rojas and Chisholm on double plays.
Leadership
Once considered an indolent player, Segura has become a fan favorite thanks both to his easy-going personality and his knack for coming up big in the clutch. He even showed veteran leadership since arriving in Philadelphia. That trend should continue as a member of the Marlins.
Familiar with Marlins Park

Jean Segura is familiar with playing at Loan-Depot Marlins Park. In 41 career road games there, he has a .305 batting average. He also hits well against left-handed pitching, which has been s a huge issue for this current Marlins team. They hit only .237 last season and were last in home runs and RBIs against left-handed pitchers.
Will Help in Rebuilding
After a disappointing 2022 season, the Marlins are looking to rebuild for 2023. With a new manager, Skip Schumaker, this team will rely predominantly on youth in 2023. The addition of Segura provides much-needed veteran leadership for this team. While he is no longer capable of being the best player on a team, his veteran presence will be an asset in the clubhouse and on the field.
