Orioles 2, Pirates 1
The Baltimore Orioles walk off the Pittsburgh Pirates for a second straight night, and fourth time in five games, knocking off Pittsburgh 2-1. Despite a slow start offensively, Baltimore stayed in the game thanks to a masterful second start of the year from Tyler Wells. The lineup rallied late with the help of a Jackson Holliday RBI single in the eighth and a walk-off single by Dylan Beavers in the bottom half of the tenth to spoil a masterful start from NL Cy Young favorite Paul Skenes. The Orioles will face the Pirates again on Thursday, September 11, having already won the series.
Orioles – Pirates Game Summary
Tyler Wells toed the slab for Baltimore, making only his second start of the year across from Paul Skenes. Wells went through the lineup with ease the first time through, striking out four on only 34 pitches. Skenes dueled with equal efficiency, getting through the first three innings while only allowing two hits and amassing five strikeouts, including his 200th of the season.
Timonium, Maryland-born Spencer Horwitz broke the scoring barrier in the fourth with his first home run in his boyhood ballpark. It was a solo shot that held as the only scoring until the bottom of the eighth inning. Colton Cowser started the innings with a sharp single into right, followed by a Dylan Carlson single. After two outs, Baltimore’s former number one overall pick, Jackson Holliday, leveled the score with an RBI single off of Isaac Mattson.
An uneventful ninth inning for both clubs led to a second extra-inning affair to start the series. With speedster Oneil Cruz starting the inning at second base for Pittsburgh, Albert Suarez entered the game for Baltimore. Suarez got a pair of groundouts and a called strike three to leave Cruz stranded.
After a leadoff walk to Colton Cowser, Daniel Johnson laid down a perfect bunt single to load the bases, giving way to Dylan Beavers. After working the count full, Beavers laced a single down the right field line for another Orioles walk-off win, their fourth in their last five games and second in a row.

The Orioles held Pittsburgh to only two hits on the day. Besides a Horwitz homerun, Pittsburgh’s only player to touch third base was Oneil Cruz in the tenth inning– where he was stranded. Wells amassed six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings, while Shawn Dubin, Kade Strowd, Rico Garcia, and Albert Suarez all claimed one other punch out apiece.
Clutch Hitting
With each of the last four Orioles wins coming via walk-off, the clutch factor in Baltimore has never been higher. Jackson Holliday and Dylan Beavers came up huge with RBI singles to propel the team to their eighth win in ten games. Starting pitcher Tyler Wells said post-game, “It’s been two rookies that have done some pretty cool things in big moments,” referencing the heroics of both Beavers and Samuel Basallo in the last five games.

Making Their Fans Sweat… Again
In the month of September, the Orioles have only won one game by more than two. Walking off the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Pirates two times each is fun, but the offense needs to get going earlier in games. Baltimore has only scored one run before the fifth inning in any of their last five games, and this was no different. The team needs to produce more earlier in games and not rely on walk-off victories.
Looking Ahead
The Orioles conclude their series with the Pirates before heading to Canada to face the Toronto Blue Jays for a three-game set. Cade Povich (3-7, 5.16 ERA) will start for Baltimore against Pittsburgh’s Johan Oviedo (2-0, 2.70 ERA) at 1:05 PM Eastern.
