The Boston Red Sox traded outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, among other pieces, to the Pittsburgh Pirates for right-hander Johan Oviedo as apart of a five-player trade. The Red Sox also sent RHP Jesus Travieso to the Pirates. The Red Sox also received lefty Tyler Samaniego and catcher Adonys Guzman.

Red Sox Acquisitions

Johan Oviedo

Oviedo was an international signing by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Cuba back in 2016. He pitched 40 1/3 innings in 2025 after recovering from Tommy John surgery, as well as a separate lat injury. He pitched to a career-high 3.57 ERA and a 1.215 WHIP.

With the likes of Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller, as well as prospects Bubba Chandler, Seth Hernandez and Hunter Barco, Oviedo was seen as excess goods.

Adonys Guzman

A fifth-round pick in the 2025, Guzman only made one appearance in Low-A Bradenton. He made some notable improvements from his sophomore to junior years at the University of Arizona, raising his OPS from .973 to 1.232.

Guzman was also a semifinalist for the Buster Posey award in 2025, given to the best collegiate catcher in the nation. He would also go on to make the Eugene NCAA Regional and College World Series All-Tournament teams.

Tyler Samaniego

A 15th round pick back in 2021, Samaniego pitched in four different levels in 2025. Starting in rookie ball, before eventually pitching the bulk of his season in Double–A Altoona. In 20 appearances with the Altoona Curve, he pitched to a 3.08 ERA with a 0.911 WHIP.

Pirates Acquisitions

Jhostynxon Garcia

Garcia, the No. 85 ranked prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, made his major league debut in 2025. Garcia would only notch seven at-bats while only recording one hit. In Triple–A Worcester, he clobbered 18 home runs in 81 games while hitting to an .810 OPS.

Garcia has managed to add some strength to his frame since getting signed by the Red Sox in 2019, while maintaining his athleticism. However, with the outfield log jam the Red Sox have right now, Garcia was seen as expendable.

Jesus Travieso

Travieso, signed as a free agent in January 2024, made 19 appearances across rookie ball and Low-A Salem. He pitched to a 3.06 ERA across both leagues.

Looking Ahead

Both Garcia and Oviedo were expendable pieces of their teams, and went to teams that needed their services. Both guys project as possible depth pieces, and in the case of Garcia, could grow into something more than simple depth.
