The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to terms with Brian Anderson. The pact is for one year. The announcement was made by Brewers Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Arnold, and posted on Twitter by Ken Rosenthal. The deal guarantees Anderson $3.5 million, and the ability to earn an additional $2 million in incentives.
Infielder/Outfielder
Anderson’s ability to play multiple positions allows Manager Craig Counsell more flexibility when putting his lineups together. Anderson can play both third base and right field. He has played 332 games at third base, and 182 games in right field. He will see time as the Brewers’ designated hitter, and could also play first base.
Six-Year Career
Anderson will turn 30 in May. Up until this point, he had spent his entire six-year career with the Miami Marlins. His career batting average is .256. In 531 games, he has 57 home runs, 106 doubles, and 233 RBI. He will provide the Brewers with another right-handed option on offense.
Past Two Years
Brian Anderson’s past two years have been disappointing because of his many injuries. In 2021, he missed time due to a left shoulder injury. Last season, lower back spasms and another shoulder injury put him on the IL. This led to the Marlins not offering him a deal. He was non-tendered in November.
Possible Starter
The Brewers still do not know who will play third base this season. Luis Urias played in 73 games last season, but struggled with errors and his overall play there. They might move him to second base to see how he performs.
Since Anderson has played plenty of third base in his career, he could compete during spring training for the Opening Day roster spot at third. For defense, he has a strong throwing arm, and has shown he can start the double play in the infield with his quick release.
Change of Scenery
The Milwaukee Brewers are of the belief that a change of scenery will benefit Brian Anderson. For Anderson to effectively help the team, they need him to put his recent struggles in the past and recapture some of his early-career promise.
Assuming he is healthy, Anderson can provide a boost to this lineup. This signing is not what the Brewer fans had in mind, but this team is better team today than they were a month ago with this move.
Ways to Compete
This Brewers organization has consistently found ways to compete in recent seasons. They ended up missing out on an NL wild card berth by a single game last season. However, they did make the playoffs in four consecutive seasons, spanning 2018-21. Adding a versatile veteran in Anderson helps them as they try to get back to the playoffs in the 2023 season.
