The New York Mets traded left-handed A.J. Minter to the Minnesota Twins for prospects Billy Amick and Bruin Agbayani. Both teams confirmed the deal Friday, three days before the August 3 trade deadline.
“Thank you New York. You welcomed this longtime rival and my wife with open arms. Super thankful to the Mets, staff, teammates and Amazin’ Met fans for everything you have done for me,” Minter wrote in a farewell message.
A.J. Minter Traded
After starting his career with the Atlanta Braves, Minter came to the Mets during the 2025 offseason. Through 13 games of last season, he showed signs of being a reliable member of the relief unit. Yet, a torn lateral muscle in his back prematurely ended his season.
Following a lengthy recovery process, A.J. Minter returned to the Mets in May of this season. He steadily picked up from where he left off, recording 20 strikeouts with a 2.35 ERA and a 1.000 WHIP. In 23 appearances, he gave up eight hits and six earned runs.
However, the Mets decided to make the trade due to his level of production and the team being at the bottom of the NL standings with a record of 47–63. Minter joins the Twins, who recovered from a sluggish start as they hold a 55–55 record. Acquiring the veteran lefty can help them fight for the top spot in the AL Central.
Prospects On The Move
For A.J. Minter, the Mets acquired Amick and Agbayani, who were ranked No. 21 and No. 29 in the Twins system. In three minor league seasons, Amick spent time playing first and third base. He tallied 149 hits, 112 RBI and 30 home runs on a .251 average.
Agbayani, on the other hand, recorded 15 hits, six RBI and three doubles in two minor league games as a middle infielder. He is also the son of former Mets outfielder Benny Agbayani, who became a fan favorite for hitting a heroic walk off homer during the 2000 NLDS. The Mets went on to reach the NLCS that year.
