Amidst a successful road trip, the New York Mets placed right-hander Devin Williams on the 15-day Injured list with a right shoulder strain. The team announced the roster change before the start of Monday’s series opener against the Atlanta Braves. In a corresponding move, righty Jonathan Pintaro was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.

“[Williams] has been dealing with a little bit of shoulder fatigue for a while now,” interim manager Andy Green said. “Something he’s felt confident that he could pitch through and we appreciate that warrior mentality to step on the mound to compete. But after the last outing it made sense to get an MRI and get him checked. I don’t think this is a long-term problem for him. I think it’s a short stint.”

Devin Williams Injury

For much of this season, Williams has provided the Mets with reliability and consistency. The former All-Star closer went 10-straight games from late April to May without allowing a run to score. Additionally, he recorded 10 strikeouts during that stretch.

Through the summer, Devin Williams continued to perform well. He allowed five runs to score across only two appearances in June. During nine outings in July, he surrendered four runs across six occasions. However, after giving up three earned runs and three hits across his last two appearances the Mets decided to place him on the injured list.

The decision comes a week after August 3. trade deadline when the Mets traded four relievers in four separate deals. Their pitching staff has already been dismantled and the absence of Williams makes the back end of it thinner. With options being limited, the Mets have relied upon prospects Jefry Yan and Jack Weisenburger to step up early on in their major league careers.

Pintaro Recalled

After placing Devin Williams on the injured list, the Mets recalled Pintaro as a temporary replacement. The righty joined the team on three separate occasions this season. He has some experience, but surrendered seven hits, seven earned runs and five walks. He struck out 15 batters across six appearances.
