Padres 7, Diamondbacks 5
PHOENIX, Apr. 23 — The San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7–5, Sunday afternoon in front of 23,655 fans with a closed roof at Chase Field. Yu Darvish with his breaking ball and splitter working did just enough to get the win. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits and five strikeouts before leaving with an injury.
Walks and Big Hits Give Padres Early Lead over Diamondbacks
The Padres led off with Fernando Tatis Jr., who singled, as did Juan Soto, advancing Tatis to third. Manny Machado reached on a fielder’s choice out, as first baseman Pavin Smith threw to third baseman Evan Longoria. After a long challenge from Padres Manager Bob Melvin, it was ruled Tatis Jr. was out.
A walk loaded the bases for Jake Cronenworth, who hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Soto. Matt Carpenter hit a bases-clearing double to make it 3-0. Drey Jameson walked both Ha-Seong Kim and Trent Grisham. Austin Nola, the number nine hitter, struck out. But after a 43-pitch top of the first from Jameson, the Padres led, 3-0.
Jameson left after one inning, being replaced by Anthony Misiewicz for the top of the second. In his last 4 2/3 innings, Jameson has thrown 114 pitches. Assistant Pitching Coach/Minor League Pitching Coordinator Barry Enright spent a significant amount of time talking to him in the dugout.
Cronenworth tripled, his first of the season, on a sharp line drive to center to lead off the third. He came home on a sacrifice fly by Carpenter to make it 4-0. Kim and Grisham flied to right for the second and third outs.
Fourth Inning
In the top of the fourth, Peter Solomon came in to pitch for the Diamondbacks. He got the first two outs before giving up a walk to Soto. Machado flied to deep right to end the top of the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Diamondbacks finally got their first hit off of Darvish. Ketel Marte tripled to the alley in right-center. A walk to Corbin Carroll, followed by a sacrifice fly from Christian Walker, scored Marte as Carroll took second. Smith hit a sharp line drive to Machado for the second out followed by grounder to second by Jake McCarthy. This ended the inning with the Padres leading, 4–1.
Top of Fifth Inning
Solomon got the first two Padre hitters out, but Carpenter hit a solo homer. With that hit, he collected his fourth RBI. Solomon got Kim to fly out to end the top of the inning. Padres 5, Diamondbacks 1.
Darvish Exits
In the bottom of the sixth, Padres pitcher Yu Darvish — who had given up two hits and a run — left the game with an apparent leg injury. He was replaced by Brent Honeywell, who got McCarthy on a strikeout for the third out. Later, the Padres announced that Darvish had a “hamstring cramp.”
Top of Seventh
Solomon continued to pitch and gave up a walk but got Machado to ground into a double play. After Xander Bogaerts walked, Joe Mantiply replaced Solomon. Mantiply gave up a Cronenworth double, scoring Bogaerts. Carpenter also doubled, scoring Cronenworth. Kim struck out to end the inning. Padres 7, Diamondbacks 1.
Bottom of Seventh
Alek Thomas and Nick Ahmed led off the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back home runs of Honeywell, but consecutive groundouts and a fly out ended the inning without any further scoring. Padres 7, Diamondbacks 3.
Another Diamondbacks Pitcher
For the top of the eighth, Jose Ruiz came in to get in some work and try to get his 13.50 ERA down. Grisham struck out swinging, followed by Nola doing the same on a fastball. Tatis Jr popped out, making it a 1–2–3 inning.
Bottom Eighth
Tim Hill replaced Honeywell and gave up a double to Carroll. Longoria grounded out, Carroll taking third. Carroll scored on a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. groundout. McCarthy, who was in a 1-for-29 slump, hit a deep homer to right-center before Thomas struck out. Padres 7, Diamondbacks 5.
Top of Ninth
Kevin Ginkel came into to pitch the ninth and got Soto on a strike out and Machado on a popout. Bogaerts hit a slow roller to Walker, who had to wait for Ginkel but made the play for the third out.
Bottom of Ninth
Josh Hader, one of the top closers in the majors, came in to pitch. He got Ahmed on a fly ball for the first out. Geraldo Perdomo came in to pinch-hit and was called out on a third strike. Pinch-hitting for Josh Rojas was Gabriel Moreno, who popped out to end the game. Padres 7, Diamondbacks 5.
