Diamondbacks vs. Cardinals Pregame — April 17, 2023
Torey Lovullo, Diamondbacks Manager
Injury Updates
Ketel Marte is back in the lineup. Manager Torey Lovullo said he’s “feeling fine.”
Joe Mantiply threw two innings last night in Amarillo and is now in St. Louis on the taxi squad.
Kyle Lewis is “feeling much better,” although Lovullo could give no further updates.
Misc.
Merrill Kelly was “fantastic” last time but did not get run support. “He and Zac Gallen put together (great) back-to-back outings last time, and hopefully that happens again today.
Zac Gallen was named NL Player of the Week. “Huge congrats to him. It doesn’t surprise me. He gets rolling, and he gets to the point where things start to come very easily to him once he’s on the mound. But behind it, he is working as hard as anybody we have. There’s a lot of studying that’s going on. He knows the spots to land pitches, knows how to land pitches. He’s got an incredible mentality out there. He doesn’t want to just win a baseball game but really wants to shut you completely down. And I think it’s 13 and two thirds scoreless (Note: It’s 14 2/3.) He doesn’t care about that, I promise you. He just knows that we’ve won those games that he’s pitched in. That’s the most important thing to him.
Cardinals first baseman and former Diamondback Paul Goldschmidt has a scheduled day off. Lovullo said it’s a case where, when he sat a star in April, he was “resting for big moments in August, September, and October.” Lovullo also said he talked to Goldschmidt and that “he’s fine. It’s just a normal day off.”
