Astros 5, Angels 4 (10 Innings)
The Houston Astros rallied late and took advantage of a 10th-inning error to earn a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels Monday at Angel Stadium.
Christian Walker delivered a game-tying RBI single in the ninth inning, and the Astros scored the winning run in the 10th to complete the comeback victory over the Angels.
Astros – Angels Game Summary
The Angels jumped in front during the second inning. Jo Adell reached after being hit by a pitch, and Nick Madrigal followed with a single before Trey Mancini drove in the first run of the game. Logan O’Hoppe added a two-run double later in the inning to give the Angels a 3-0 lead.
The Astros answered in the third when Yordan Alvarez reached on an error and scored on an RBI double from Walker. They remained within striking distance before breaking through again in the sixth inning. Isaac Paredes opened the frame with a double, and LaMonte Wade Jr. followed with an RBI double. Cam Smith then delivered another RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.
The Angels regained the lead in the seventh when Zach Neto launched a solo home run to left-center field. The Astros entered the ninth trailing by one run but found an answer. Jeremy Peña worked a walk, stole second base, and scored on a game-tying RBI single from Walker.
The game moved to extra innings, where Jose Altuve began the 10th inning at second base and eventually scored the go-ahead run on an Angels throwing error. Brice Matthews also contributed offensively with a bunt single that moved Altuve to third and applied pressure to the Angels defense.
The Angels threatened in the bottom half after Jose Siri singled, but Brice Matthews threw out Mike Trout at home plate to preserve the lead. Bryan Abreu recorded the final two outs of the game, and the Astros completed another late comeback victory.
The Astros also received four scoreless relief innings, which allowed the offense time to erase the deficit. Astros finished with three extra-base hits and continued its recent trend of finding ways to win close games late.
What Went Right for the Astros
The Pitching Staff
The Angels scored three runs in the second inning and threatened to add more throughout the night. Spencer Arrighetti prevented the game from getting out of hand after the rough frame, allowing the Astros time to work back into the contest. Enyel De Los Santos, Bryan King, Josh Hader, and Abreu combined for four scoreless innings in relief and struck out key hitters late.
Capitalized on Momentum Shifts
The Astros did not generate much offense through five innings, but they took advantage of opportunities once they appeared. Wade and Smith delivered RBI doubles in the sixth inning, Walker tied the game in the ninth, and the Astros immediately applied pressure in the tenth. Every late scoring chance resulted in meaningful production.
Defensive Execution Made the Difference
The game turned on defense in extra innings. Matthews delivered a perfect throw from left field to cut down Trout at home plate, preventing the tying run from scoring. The Astros also turned a double play in the sixth inning that erased a potential Angels rally and kept the deficit at one run.
What Went Wrong for the Astros
Early Offensive Opportunities Wasted
The Astros put runners in scoring position during several early innings but failed to deliver the hit needed to change the game. They left multiple runners on base through the first five innings and managed only one run despite several traffic-filled opportunities.
Swing-and-Miss Issues Continued
The lineup struck out 12 times and struggled to consistently put pressure on Angels pitching. Several rallies ended before they could develop because hitters failed to make contact in key situations.
The Second Inning Created an Uphill Battle
A hit batter, two walks, and several hard-hit balls allowed the Angels to build an early three-run lead. The Astros spent most of the night trying to erase that deficit before finally completing the comeback in the ninth inning.
Quick Hits:

- Jeremy Peña stole two bases and scored the tying run.
- Josh Hader struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.
- Bryan Abreu earned the save after recording the final two outs in the 10th.
