Major League Baseball announced the rest of their All-Star rosters on Sunday. One notable name among the list of 32 first-time participants is Pittsburgh Pirates rookie pitching phenom Paul Skenes. The nod highlights the electrifying start of Skenes’ major league career. He has now become the first player to ever make the All-Star Game a year after being selected first overall in the MLB Draft.
Despite starting the season in AAA, the 22-year-old Skenes has already made his share of history in his 10 appearances. Skenes has racked up a 5–0 record with a 2.12 ERA and 78 strikeouts. Additionally, he has a 1.011 WHIP and 2.7 WAR across 59 1/3 innings. Among players who have pitched at least fifty innings this season, his ERA is the second-lowest in the league behind only Reynaldo Lopez (6–2, 1.83 ERA) of the Atlanta Braves.
The most recent start in Skenes’ record-breaking rookie season saw him strike out eight in a 14–2 romp over the New York Mets.

In a video posted by the Pirates to X, Skenes said to his fellow Pirates, “I’m just grateful for all of you guys. Since the first day I’ve been here I’ve been part of the team. I couldn’t have done it without you guys.”
Skenes is one of two Pirates to make the All-Star Game, alongside outfielder Bryan Reynolds, who gets his second nod. The All-Star Game featuring Skenes will be played on Tuesday, July 16th at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
