Astros 9, Guardians 3
The Houston Astros overcame an early deficit and pulled away late, using a dominant pitching performance and a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Cleveland Guardians 9–3 on Friday night at Daikin Park.
Jeremy Peña homered twice, Jose Altuve delivered a go-ahead three-run home run, and Tatsuya Imai struck out 11 batters as the Astros opened their series against the Guardians with a convincing victory.
Astros – Guardians Game Summary
The Astros found themselves trailing early after the Guardians broke through in the third inning. Travis Bazzana and Brayan Rocchio sparked the rally with doubles before Rhys Hoskins connected on a two-run home run, giving the Guardians a 3–1 advantage.
Despite the rough inning, Imai quickly regained control. The right-hander settled in and dominated the remainder of his outing, consistently missing bats and preventing the Guardians from building on their lead.
The Astros began chipping away in the bottom of the third when Peña launched a solo home run to left field. The blast cut the deficit to one run and shifted momentum back toward the home side.
For several innings, the game remained tightly contested as Imai and Guardians starter Tanner Bibee traded scoreless frames. Yainer Diaz doubled in the fourth inning, but the Astros were unable to bring him home.
The turning point came in the sixth. Yordan Alvarez drew a walk and Isaac Paredes followed with a single before Altuve crushed a three-run home run to the Crawford Boxes. The swing erased the deficit and gave the Astros a 5–3 lead.
The offense continued to add on from there. Peña connected on his second home run of the night in the seventh inning, and Altuve later drove in another run with an RBI double. In the eighth, Jake Meyers delivered an RBI ground-rule double before Peña added an RBI single to extend the lead even further.
The Astros’ pitching staff kept the Guardians off the board after Imai exited. Relievers Steven Okert and Mike Burrows combined for three scoreless innings, helping secure the victory. Peña added the final highlight of the night with a spectacular catch at shortstop to end the game.
