Amidst his return from the Injured List, infielder Mark Vientos played a contributing role during the New York Mets series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. At Tropicana Field on Monday evening, he hit into a double play, which scored the Mets’ first run as a result. He bounced back in the seventh by smashing a home run deep to center, marking his 12th of the regular season and first since July 4. His efforts helped his team take the series opener with a narrow 3–2 victory.
“It felt great to come back and contribute in some way. A home run is always cool,” Vientos said following the triumph.
Making Contributions
Vientos didn’t have a great start to his fifth season with the Mets. He struggled with consistency at the plate and fielding when the Mets utilized him as their everyday first baseman. A fractured wrist sustained on July 10 further derailed his season, putting his future in question.
However, Mark Vientos was able to find success during his rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Syracuse. His best performance came against Lehigh Valley, when he went 4-for-5 with three home runs and five RBI. The outing prompted the Mets to recall him in advance of their matchup against the Rays.
Vientos struggled at the start of the series opener. He struck out in the second and hit into the aforementioned double play during the fourth. The Mets’ first run scored on that play, but limited their chances of building up momentum after a Bo Bichette double and a single from Carson Benge. Yet, Vientos recovered when he took a pitch from left-hander Ian Seymour deep for a seventh inning solo shot. His 12th blast of the season, which traveled 418 feet off 102.7 mph of exit velocity, accounted for his fourth homer over the last two days.
“For me it’s to keep your confidence up and turn yourself loose. He has such a powerful swing and stays in the middle of the ballpark and turns himself loose. He can drive the ball anywhere,” interim manager Andy Green said. “He’s proven that in 2026 and 2024 and there all parts of the park. He went to the big part of the park today. There’s only a few guys that can do that consistently and he can.”
Remaining Consistent
After going 1-for-4 with a home run, Vientos has begun to produce at a more consistent pace. This will benefit him in contributing to the Mets success, which results in them picking up more wins.
“Trusting my ability. Going out there having fun and I’m glad that I got two opportunities to put us on the board and we got the win today so that’s all that matters,” Vientos added.
Outside of Mark Vientos, Christopher Morel made a jumping catch to record the final out in the fifth. This prevented any runs from scoring with the bases loaded. Morel also recorded a single during the seventh.
“It was an amazing play and I’m happy for him. He made two plays and got a hit. He had a good game today,” Vientos concluded.
