Joey Wiemer gets his chance for the Milwaukee Brewers. The outfielder was called up this past weekend when Luis Urias was placed on the IL with a hamstring injury. Wiemer certainly has an opportunity to display his skills and stay on the big-league roster if he can show them that he can handle the day-to-day aspect of MLB. He was very entertaining with his powerful swing during Spring Training 2023.
Urias Injury
Wiemer replaces the outfielder who will move into Urias’ position at third. The Urias injury will keep him out up to eight weeks, though some reports indicate it could be longer. That injury made it interesting to see how the Brewers and Manager Craig Counsell would handle the third base position. Brian Anderson, who came up as a third baseman, started the season in right field. He will now move back to third base on a regular basis. When he needs a day off or plays in the outfield, look for Mike Brosseau to get the start at third.

Joey Wiemer gets his chance after an excellent showing during Spring Training. He hit 262 with two home runs, three stolen bases, and four RBIs. He was one of the final roster cuts back to the Minors.
According to mlb.com, Wiemer is the number three prospect in the Brewers organization. He was a fourth-round selection in the 2020 draft. In 2021, he hit 27 home runs at two A-ball levels. He combined for 21 home runs at Double-A and Triple-A last season. What the scouts like about him is his above-average speed, showcased by 61 stolen bases in the minors. Wiemer also demonstrated his readiness as a defensive asset with his strong throwing arm and his ability to run-down hard-hit balls in the power alleys.
Immediate Starter
After his call-up, Wiemer started in center field and batted ninth on Saturday. The first pitch he saw on his first-ever MLB at-bat, he doubled. For a player listed at 6’4 and 220 lbs., he showed off his speed to get that extra base. The next day, he singled and scored his first run. He also looked comfortable in the outfield and already has four putouts.
Outlook
Joey Wiemer gets his chance with much being made of the fact that four of the Brewers’ top five prospects are outfielders. Garrett Mitchell, who made his debut last August, was the Opening Day center fielder for 2023. With both Mitchell and Wiemer now in the lineup, the fans are getting a preview of how this outfield is going to look for the team’s future.
Fans should not expect Wiemer to have a high batting average early on but should be able to adjust and perform over the next eight weeks while Urias is out. If he is hitting for power, is playing well in the outfield, and has adapted well, the Brewers will have a difficult time sending him back to Triple-A.
