The Milwaukee Brewers‘ second base options will be settled over the next few weeks as spring training winds down. With the trade of Kolten Wong, the team has been looking at several players. They are looking at an everyday starter, and also who will serve as backup(s).

Important Position

All positions in baseball are important, but a good defensive second baseman is needed as they are involved with most balls hit on the right side of the infield.  They must cover second on stolen base attempts, and back up the play when the shortstop takes the throw. They also need to cover first base on bunts up the first base line, and need to have quick hands and feet. The skill to get rid of the ball rapidly and be able to make the swift turn on the double play ball is their most important trait.

Spring Training Competition

The battle for the second base position has been an interesting one for them so far in spring training. After trading Wong to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Abraham Toro and Jesse Winker, they needed to find a starter. This has created competition among six different players. Some are prospects; others are non-roster invitees (NRI) and a few veterans mixed in as well.

Players to Consider

One of the Milwaukee Brewers’ second base options is Luis Urias, who has some experience. He has played in 119 games in his career. Owen Miller was brought in, along with Abraham Toro, to compete. Other options include veterans Mike Brosseau and Josh VanMeter, and they are all looking to see if they can step in and win a roster spot. However, other than Urias, all of these players are seen as utility players with an occasional start.

Prospect Given Look

Shortstop Brice Turang is one of the Brewers’ top prospects, and he will be given a look during the final weeks of camp. At this time with the emergence of Willy Adames at shortstop, Turang could move to second. He has the defensive skills to be an above average defender. Also working in his favor is, he is the only left-handed hitter of the group in competition for the spot.

Growing Pains

The Milwaukee Brewers second base options come with growing pains. Turang has shown he’s ready for the big leagues. However, his lack of experience might limit his chances as an everyday second baseman. If he does make the team, it will most likely be a platoon situation. Then again if he starts off well as a platoon player and is hitting and fielding, it will be just a matter of time that he is in the lineup every day.
